Introduction

New bosses sometimes sound as though they have been tossed into the deep end of a lake with no idea what to do except tread water. Session 4: Action-Centered Leadership

As a supervisor, they are responsible for a wide range of tasks. It can be difficult to satisfy everyone's needs, particularly when competing interests are present.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Individual
  • Team
  • Task
  • Considering the Possibilities

Session 5: Making Plans

The priority list is a helpful guide for everyone, not just administrators. However, making a list can be a futile exercise if they write it, put it down, and never return to it again.

Introduction

Choosing what is urgent and what is relevant is an important aspect of planning. This assists in determining when to focus activities in order to complete tasks in a priority order. This is where the Urgent-Important Matrix comes in.

  • Going After Your Dreams
  • Going After Your Dreams

Often leadership books and courses use Situational Leadership because it delivers knowledge in a manner that is relevant to the various facets of various workplaces.

The Situational Leadership II® Model

There are many very good leaderships styles that have been established over several years of research and with the support of several organizations and their executives. Both of these models have certain aspects in common that they can all draw from in their search to be the best leaders they can be.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Director’s Style
  • Coach’s Style
  • Supporter’s Style
  • Delegator’s Style
  • Understanding Your Comfort Zone

Session 9: What’s Your Type? How About Mine?

If an individual is open to self-discovery, they gain insights into their own attitudes and motives.

Assessing Your Preferences

There are several avenues to explore the personality types of the individuals with whom we work and play.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Identifying Your Characteristics and Preferences
  • Example

  • Mostly D’s – Resourceful Artisans
  • Mostly D’s – Resourceful Artisans, Part Two

Session 10: Team Building Tips

Getting together people from different cultures, new thoughts, and the opportunity to perform a multitude of activities is what makes work an interesting place to be.

What is a Team?

A team, as described by Glenn Parker, is "a group of people with a high degree of interdependence directed toward the accomplishment of an objective or the completion of a mission."

Topics to be discussed include:

  • What Does That Mean?
  • Advantages and Disadvantages of Teams
  • The Advantages of Teams
  • How Can Teams Help Employees Grow?

Session 11: Developing a High-Performing Team

The creation of a team follows a predictable trend. Knowing the series will help to assist the team and achieve the best possible results together.

The Five Stages of Team Development

There has been a lot of research done on teams and group dynamics. This simple model, created by Bruce Tuckman, stresses that all teams and organizations go through five stages of growth, but they do not always go through those stages together or at the same time.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Forming
  • Storming
  • Norming
  • Performing
  • Adjourning
  • How Can I Help?
  • Team Problem Solving
  • Tips for Effective Leadership
  • Characteristics of Team Players

Session 12: Communication Skills

It is simply not appropriate to explain becoming a supervisor without considering communication. And if they are not communicating with others, they may be conveying a message.

Defining Communication

Communication is described as the ability to send messages and make the other party understand them even though they do not reply.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Making Connections
  • Communication Barriers
  • Active Listening Skills
  • Responding to Feelings
  • Reading Cues
  • Demonstration Cues

  • Probing Techniques
  • The Communication Process
  • Breaking Down the Process
  • Tips and Tricks

Session 13: Motivating Employees

It is often attempted to talk about the staff's motivation in clear terms, despite the fact that it is a tough thing to pin down.

To Motivate or Instigate

Motivation is a difficult concept to understand. They used to say as supervisors that the best way to convince someone to do something was to make them want to do it in order to get something they want or stop something they don't want. They will either pay them or discipline them.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • The Carrot
  • The Whip
  • The Plant
  • What Do You Think?
  • Making Connections

Session 14: Orientation and Onboarding

This session would look at the induction curriculum and how much it engages incoming hires.

The First 48 Hours

Companies invest a considerable amount of time and resources in attracting and hiring new workers. Most administrators think their work is finished after the recruiting decision has been made. When a new employee arrives at work, there is very little systematic consideration given to affirm the notion that the employee made the correct decision and has joined a well-organized, well-run organisation.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Orientation
  • Onboarding
  • How Did Your Orientation Rate?
  • Questions

Session 15: Training Tips and Tricks

As a boss, they will periodically consider the workers' level of maturity. Although they may prepare for them to attend outside training, managers are often expected to have training as well.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Guidelines for Effective Training
  • Developing Your Training Skills

Session 16: Providing Feedback

Some people dislike receiving reviews as much as we dislike giving it. However, it is something that everybody demands.

The Purpose of Feedback

The aim of feedback is to help people improve their success in the future. Even if it does not result in the optimal level of success, the feedback meeting offers a forum for clarification of goals, outcomes, inspiration, and how to achieve.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • In Private
  • Balanced
  • Relevant
  • Specific
  • Documented
  • Personal (In the Right Way)
  • Skill Building
  • Receiving Feedback

Session 17: Doing Delegation Right

This session will go into the dos and don'ts of delegation. It will also have the opportunity to learn some delegation skills.

Delegation is a Key Skill!

Delegation is one of the most important qualities a boss can learn. It lessens a manager's workload while still developing staff skills.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Defining Responsibility and Accountability
  • Defining Delegation
  • Making Connections

Session 18: Dealing with Conflict

Nobody likes to deal with tension, but the fact is that as people cooperate, they cannot all agree with one another. In reality, any degree of disagreement may be helpful.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Process Overview
  • Deciding When To Get Involved
  • The Problem Solving Model
  • Breaking Down The Model
  • Background Information, Part One
  • Background Information, Part Two
  • Team Leader's Worksheet

Session 19: Managing Disciplinary Issues

Discipline is not correlated with punishment: it may be both positive and negative.

What is Discipline?

Discipline is an essential component of running a successful organisation. The term "discipline" is derived from the word "disciple," which means "to form or instruct." Discipline is not intended to be a harsh concept, despite the fact that it is often associated with discipline.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • The Disciplinary Meeting
  • A Sample Discipline Checklist for a Supervisor

Session 20: A Personal Action Plan

Making a personal action plan will assist one with keeping on board and on goal. Taking accountability for one's decisions and consequences gets things done. This final exercise allows them to synthesize their previous learning and bring it into effect.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Supervisors course. I believe I learnt a good deal about myself as a leader and a manager. my only critique is that there are some slides and sections of the course with bugs that make the learning process tedious. for example the Voice over reading the text for slides that are not the current slide.
aside from minor details as such, the course was enjoyable and educational.

Model Overview

John Adair's action-centered leadership style will assist in managing goals. This model demonstrates how leadership is a balancing act between people, organisations, and the work to be accomplished.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Going After Your Dreams
  • Going After Your Dreams
  • The SPIRIT Acronym

Session 8: The Situational Leadership Model

Often leadership books and courses use Situational Leadership because it delivers knowledge in a manner that is relevant to the various facets of various workplaces.

The Situational Leadership II® Model

There are many very good leaderships styles that have been established over several years of research and with the support of several organizations and their executives. Both of these models have certain aspects in common that they can all draw from in their search to be the best leaders they can be.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Director’s Style
  • Coach’s Style
  • Supporter’s Style
  • Delegator’s Style
  • Understanding Your Comfort Zone
  • Our Comfort Zone
  • The Cyclical Process

Session 9: What’s Your Type? How About Mine?

If an individual is open to self-discovery, they gain insights into their own attitudes and motives.

Assessing Your Preferences

There are several avenues to explore the personality types of the individuals with whom we work and play.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Identifying Your Characteristics and Preferences
  • Example
  • Questionnaire
  • What Does it Mean To Have a Number?
  • Mostly A’s – Inquiring Rationals, Part One

  • Mostly C’s – Organized Guardians, Part Two
  • Mostly D’s – Resourceful Artisans
  • Mostly D’s – Resourceful Artisans, Part Two
  • What’s Important?
  • Making Connections

Session 10: Team Building Tips

Getting together people from different cultures, new thoughts, and the opportunity to perform a multitude of activities is what makes work an interesting place to be.

What is a Team?

A team, as described by Glenn Parker, is "a group of people with a high degree of interdependence directed toward the accomplishment of an objective or the completion of a mission."

Topics to be discussed include:

  • What Does That Mean?
  • Advantages and Disadvantages of Teams
  • The Advantages of Teams
  • How Can Teams Help Employees Grow?

Session 11: Developing a High-Performing Team

The creation of a team follows a predictable trend. Knowing the series will help to assist the team and achieve the best possible results together.

The Five Stages of Team Development

There has been a lot of research done on teams and group dynamics. This simple model, created by Bruce Tuckman, stresses that all teams and organizations go through five stages of growth, but they do not always go through those stages together or at the same time.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Forming
  • Storming
  • Norming
  • Performing
  • Adjourning
  • How Can I Help?
  • Team Problem Solving
  • Tips for Effective Leadership
  • Characteristics of Team Players

Session 12: Communication Skills

It is simply not appropriate to explain becoming a supervisor without considering communication. And if they are not communicating with others, they may be conveying a message.

Defining Communication

Communication is described as the ability to send messages and make the other party understand them even though they do not reply.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Making Connections
  • Communication Barriers
  • Active Listening Skills
  • Responding to Feelings
  • Reading Cues
  • Demonstration Cues
  • Tips for Becoming a Better Listener
  • Making Connections
  • Building Relationships with Questions
  • Open Questions
  • Closed Questions
  • Opening Up Questions
  • Probing Techniques
  • Verbal and Non-Verbal Probes

  • Where I Want to Go
  • How I Will Get There

I thoroughly enjoyed the Supervisors course. I believe I learnt a good deal about myself as a leader and a manager. my only critique is that there are some slides and sections of the course with bugs that make the learning process tedious. for example the Voice over reading the text for slides that are not the current slide.
aside from minor details as such, the course was enjoyable and educational.
