Teenage Beauty Make-over Courses Outline

Unit One: The Skin

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Summarize the functions of the skin
  • Understand the difference between the epidermis and dermis
  • Understand the role of the sweat glands

The skin is the largest organ of the body and has many functions. We are most aware of it as it covers every inch of the body. It is the component of the body which is most exposed to injury. Daily we tend to bring minor trauma to our skin. Our skin is taken for granted. In fact, it is a very complex organ whose correct functioning is essential to life.

The Dermis

The dermis is attached to the epidermis by projections from the dermis called papillae. The dermis is the inner layer which consists of fibrous and connective tissue.

Sweat Glands

The main part of the sweat gland is situated in the dermis. The duct, however, spirals towards the surface through the epidermis. The gland is made up of a tightly convoluted tube which is lined by cubical epithelium and surrounded by a network of capillaries.

Nails

Nails are modifications of the epidermis, and are horny plates corresponding to the claws or hooves of animals. Nails are developed from the stratum lucidum of the nail bed, and composed of densely packed keratinized cells.

HAIR

Most parts of the skin are covered by hair either course or downy. No hair is found on the palms of the hand or soles of the feet. The roots of the hairs are found in the dermis.

Unit Two: The Skin Part Two

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Explain the negative factors that have a detrimental effect on the health of our skins
  • Understand the characteristics of basic skin types
  • Summarize a though daily skincare routine suitable for all skin types
  • Discuss the benefits of exfoliation and mask application

Your Skin Type

  • Dry Skin
  • Greasy Skin
  • Combination Skin
  • Balanced Skin

Products in general

Any of the brand names available in the large stores and pharmacists are safe to use, though if you or your clients have a sensitive skin or have suffered form allergies, it is probably wiser to go for the ranges of hypo-allergenic products. These have as many as possible of the potentially irritating ingredients such as perfume, screened out of them.

Unit Three: Personal Hygiene

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Discuss the benefits of having good Personal Hygiene
  • Understand the benefits of bathing and exfoliating the body
  • Describe how to achieve Internal Cleanliness

Neither sweat nor sebum smells unpleasant in itself; to the contrary, the vague salty odor on the skin can often be found to be both healthy and attractive. The body odors that people do find objectionable manifest themselves when air is unable to circulate freely over the skin because of clothes, and so moisture cannot evaporate.

Special Bath Treatments. Depending on what you put into the water, a bath can be:

  • Nourishing
  • Stimulating
  • Toning
  • Soothing
  • Relaxing

Application of Body Scrubs. These should be used for:

  • Gooseflesh
  • Blackheads
  • Skin that needs revitalizing

Chest and Back Spots

This complaint is common for the more 'greasy-skinned' women as well as for adolescents. The areas should be kept clean by regular washing and scrubbing (if not too blemished and tender), with a bath brush, a loofah, a bath mitt, or by using a special abrasive sponge and medicated soap.

Body Odor

It is a fact that everybody sweats. However, there is no need for a woman to smell unless she is careless or just plain uncaring about herself. Sweat only becomes smelly in the areas of the body where fresh air does not circulate easily.

Unit Four: Beauty and Health

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Describe how a woman's genetic inheritance will affect her general health and body appearance
  • Explain environmental factors that affect how a woman develops

All students will obviously appreciate that the transition from girl to young woman and from young woman to mature woman takes time and, as in everything else, the processes will be shorter, longer, easier or more complicated depending on a number of factors.

The most important of these include:

  1. Genetic inheritance.
  2. The Environment in which a woman grows up and lives.

The course assignments will describe the essentials for basic healthy living:

  1. Food
  2. Exercise
  3. Hygiene

Unit Five: Skin Care

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Summarize the importance of good skin care
  • Discuss any differences between morning and evening skincare routines
  • Understand the benefits of facial massage and muscle expression exercises

The basis of successful beauty care is not to aim too high. No matter how good the intentions, you or your client are far more likely to spend five minutes a day on a simple routine than hours a week fiddling around with a host of exotic products.

Night and Morning Skin-Care Routine

  • The Cleansing Process
  • The Toning Process
  • The Nourishing Process

Regular Self-Appraisal

Every so often, every week or every month, time out should be taken to take stock of your facial needs and requirements.

Facial Massager Procedure

  • The Neck and Chin Process
  • The Jaw Bone Process
  • The Cheeks Process
  • The Mouth Process
  • The Forehead Process
  • The Eyes Process
  • The Nose to Ears Process

Unit Six: Hand Protection

Despite all of the above examples, women expect their hands and feet to not only work efficiently but also to look good. This is an area in which a beauty therapist's knowledge and skills often prove to be invaluable to the client.

Hand Protection

It is not so many years ago that hands were seen as being able to reveal a woman's social status. A 'lady's' hands were always soft and white, showing that she did no manual work, and to keep them this way hand care was taken very seriously.

Hand Cleaning

Strange as it may seem, it is possible to forget for days on end actually to clean the hands. They may be washed at odd moments during the day, but this is not the same thing. Often women are so busy cleaning their face, teeth and so on that their hands are left out of the process.

Hand Nourishing

Last thing at night, after having applied the moisturizer or night cream, massage in some hand cream. This should not take long; simply smooth on to the fronts and the backs of the hands, and massage each finger quickly.

Hand Massage

Following a manicure, and also at night once in a while, it should be ensured that the hands are given a good massage.

Hand Beauty Treatment

Students can give their own, or a client's hands, a mask to improve the color and texture of the skin, just as they would do with the face.

Hand Exercises

Exercising will stimulate the circulation of blood to the hands and encourage nail growth, and will keep the hands supple and flexible.

Unit Seven: The Hair

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Understand the structure of the hair
  • Identify five hair characteristics which will affect the overall look and condition of the hair
  • Discuss the factors that can contribute to hair damage

Hair Structures

Hair, like nails, is an appendage of the skin and similar in composition to the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin.

  1. The Cuticle
  2. The Cortex
  3. The Medulla

Growth of Hair

Hair is the most rapidly developing cellular structure in the entire body, with the possible exception of bone marrow. It grows on average about half an inch (1.25 cm) a month, faster in summer than in winter and more at night than in the daytime. Length is determined by the growing cycle. The growing phase, anagen, can last up to six years. Followed by the degenerating phase, catagen, when the hair follicle stops growing and then shrinks.

The main causes of dry and straw like hair are seen as being either natural wear and tear or mechanical damage, and chemical damage.

  • Natural Damage
  • Wear and Tear and Mechanical Damage
  • Chemical Damage

Hair products

  • Shampoo
  • Rinses
  • Conditioners
  • Setting Agents
  • Hair Sprays

Unit Eight: The Face

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Understand the purpose of highlighting and shading the features of the face
  • Summarize the various facial shapes
  • Explain how to use make-up techniques to alter and enhance a feature

The great value of modern-day cosmetics is that a little goes a long way. The trend today is to wear much less make-up than in past years.

Face Shaping

Most students will already appreciate that apart from undergoing plastic surgery, there is relatively little that a woman (or a beauty therapist, for that matter) can do to alter the basic shape and structure of her face and her features.

  1. Working with the Square face
  2. Working with the Long Face
  3. Working with the Oval Face
  4. Working with the Heart Shaped face
  5. Working with the Pear-Shaped face

Unit Nine: Skin Colors

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Describe how to color select a foundation for a client’s skin tone
  • Understand how to correct mouth and lip concerns using make-up techniques
  • Explain how to deal with sensitivity to products

Whatever the color of the skin, the same basic rules apply, and students should always proceed as follows:

  1. Choose a foundation to match the client’s actual skin tone as exactly as possible.
  2. If the client’s skin is in good condition, a tinted moisturizer is preferable for a more natural look.
  3. Color and shape should be added in the form of blushers, shaders and highlighters

We will also discuss how it is possible to correct the mouth and the lips. In doing so we shall be looking at the problems and correction of the following:

  • Flat Mouth
  • Button Mouth
  • Ageing Mouth
  • Uneven Lips
  • Unbalanced Lips
  • Wide Mouth
  • Drooping Mouth
  • Thin Lips
  • Sensitive Lips

Unit Ten: Facial Workout

The Learning Outcomes for this assignment are:

  • Explain the steps involved in a "facial workout"
  • Understand the benefits of facial aerobics
  • Describe the concept of metabolism
  • Understand the psychological benefits of exercise

The Warm Up

This exercise will tone up the large cheek muscles which are so prone to sagging. It is performed FAST with no half-hearted movements and then it will oxygenate your facial tissues very effectively.

Other facial workouts include:

  • Firming the mouth
  • For the under-eye area
  • For the forehead area
  • To firm the jawline

In this unit, we will also discuss:

  • Concept of metabolism
  • Physical benefits of exercise
  • Psychological benefits of exercise
  • Various types of exercise
  • Walking and swimming as a form of exercise
  • Getting the exercise program started

Recognition & Accreditation

All students who complete this course, receive a certificate of completion with a passing score (for the online assessment) and will be issued a certificate via email.

  1. Food
  2. Exercise
  3. Hygiene
